Grading & Marking
Step-by-step guides for marking theory tests, projects, portfolios, and practicals — with AI assist, student switcher, and grade release.
Marking a Theory Test
Open the assessment
Go to Assessments and click the theory test. You'll see a student list with their attempt status — submitted, in progress, or paused.
Click a student's attempt
Open their submission. Auto-marked questions (MC, T/F, matching, ordering) already have scores. Written questions are flagged for review.
Review AI suggestions for written responses
For short-answer and extended-response questions, AI shows a suggested mark and draft feedback based on your marking key. Read carefully.
Accept, adjust, or override
Click ✓ to accept the AI suggestion, or type your own mark and feedback. Nothing saves until you confirm.
Move to the next student
Use Previous / Next student buttons. Your marks are auto-saved as you navigate.
Finalise and release
Once all submissions are reviewed, click 'Release Results'. Students see their grade and feedback immediately.
💡 Pro Tip
You don't need to mark all students before releasing. You can release individual students as you go — useful if some students need grades urgently.
AI-assisted marking

🤖 How AI marking works
AI analyses the student's response against the marking key and question requirements, then suggests a mark and draft feedback. It is especially useful for catching clearly correct or clearly incorrect answers quickly — but always requires your review for nuanced responses. The AI never finalises marks without your approval.
One-click accept
Click the tick to accept the AI suggestion instantly and move to the next question.
Override
Type your own mark and feedback over the AI suggestion at any time.
Reject suggestion
Click ✗ to dismiss the AI suggestion and mark manually from scratch.
Accuracy tracking
TeacherAI logs your overrides to improve AI suggestions for your course over time.
ℹ️ Note
AI marking suggestions are a first-pass reading assistant — not an automated grading system. Always review borderline cases, extended responses, and nuanced answers yourself.
Student switcher
The marking panel includes a student switcher so you can grade your entire class without going back to the list between each student:
← Previous
Jump to the previous student in the class list.
Name dropdown
Click the student name to open a list and jump to any student directly.
Next →
Advance to the next student. Marks are auto-saved as you navigate.
💡 Pro Tip
Sort the student list by submission date (newest first) before opening the switcher to mark the most recent submissions first.
Marking a Project
Project assessments are marked using a rubric. Each section of the project has criteria with descriptors at each grade level.
Open the project assessment → Grading tab
You see the student list with submission status — not submitted, submitted, or graded.
Click a student
View their uploaded project files, screenshots, or links. Download files you need to open externally.
Select a grade tier for each rubric section
Click the descriptor that best matches the student's work for each criterion. The overall mark calculates automatically.
Add feedback
Type feedback per section or an overall comment. Students see this alongside their grade.
Use the student switcher
Navigate to the next student. Grades auto-save.
ℹ️ Note
If AI grading is enabled, you can click 'Generate AI Feedback' to get a draft feedback comment for each rubric section. Review and edit before saving — it's a starting point, not a final answer.
Portfolio Grading (Tier-aware)
Portfolio assessments grade students based on their overall completion and quality across linked lessons and activities. For courses with tiered marking (Base and Gold), the grading panel automatically shows the correct rubric for whichever tier the student chose.
📊 Auto-calculated components
- • Completion % — lessons finished out of total
- • Quality % — marks earned across activities
- • Raw percentage shown before teacher adjustment
✏️ Teacher adjustment
- • Override the calculated grade with a manual mark
- • Add a written feedback summary
- • Toggle AI feedback visibility to student
🥉 Base tier
Standard achievement descriptors. Marks reflect core curriculum expectations.
🥇 Gold / Extension tier
Higher-level descriptors. Students who chose Gold are marked against extension expectations.
Releasing grades
Grades are never visible to students until you explicitly release them. This lets you review the full class before anything goes out.
Mark all (or enough) submissions
Work through the class using the student switcher. You can release at any time — you don't need 100% done.
Click 'Release Results'
A confirmation dialog asks you to confirm. Once released, all marked students see their grade and feedback immediately.
ℹ️ Note
If you want to release grades to a single student early (e.g. a student collecting early), you can mark and release that individual submission independently.
Grade book
The Grades tab in each class gives a full grade book view:
Student × Assessment grid
Students as rows, assessments as columns. Click any cell to view or edit that student's grade.
Weighted totals
Assessment weights (%) are applied automatically. The final column shows each student's overall course grade.
Export as CSV
Download the full grade book for external reporting or SIS integration.
Manual adjustments
Override any calculated grade with a manual mark. Adjustment history is logged.
