Chapter Builder
Build custom interactive chapters with reading sections, embedded videos, activities, hints, and model solutions.
Accessing the Chapter Builder
Go to My Chapters
Click 'My Content' in the sidebar, then click the 'My Chapters' tab at the top of the page.
Click + New Chapter
The Chapter Builder opens in a new page.
Or edit an existing chapter
Find the chapter in your My Chapters list → click Edit to open it in the builder.

ℹ️ Note
You can also clone any chapter from the Marketplace into My Content, then edit it in the builder — a good starting point rather than from scratch.

Chapter metadata
Fill in the chapter details first — these control where it appears in the course and how it is presented to students:
Title & Subtitle
The chapter name students see on their course page.
Subject / Course / Topic
Links the chapter to the correct place in the course structure.
Estimated time
Shown on the chapter card so students can plan how long it will take.
Learning objectives
Bullet points shown at the start of the chapter so students know what they will learn.
Total XP
How many XP points students earn for completing the chapter.
Difficulty level
Core, Extension, or ATAR — sets the badge shown on the card.
Adding sections
A chapter is made up of sections. Each section has a type that determines what content appears:
Reading
Rich text blocks — headings, paragraphs, bullet lists, callout boxes (info, tip, warning, definition, example).
Video
Embed a YouTube video or uploaded video for students to watch.
Activity
One or more interactive questions — short answer, flashcard, matching, fill-in-blank, etc.
Checkpoint
A quick embedded quiz to confirm understanding before continuing.
Summary
Key takeaways listed at the end of the chapter (or a section).
Reference
Quick-lookup tables, glossary entries, or formula sheets students can return to.
Use the drag handle on each section to reorder them. Chapters typically flow: Reading → Activity → Reading → Activity → Summary.
Configuring activities
For Activity sections, configure each question with:
Widget type
Short answer, extended response, flashcard, matching, fill-in-blank, multiple choice, or textarea.
Description
The instruction shown above the activity (e.g. "Answer the following question in 2–3 sentences").
Points
XP points awarded for completing this specific activity.
Estimated time
How long this activity should take — used for overall chapter time estimate.
💡 Pro Tip
Keep activity descriptions clear and instructional. A good description tells students exactly what to do and how long the answer should be, so they are not guessing.
Adding hints & solutions
Every activity should have at least two hints and a full model solution:
Click 'Add Hint'
Under any activity in the builder, click '+ Add Hint'. Add at least 2 hints. The first should nudge without revealing the answer; the second can go further.
Write the model solution
Click '+ Add Solution' and write a complete, correct answer. Explain the reasoning — not just the final answer.
Set reveal threshold
Set how many attempts a student must make before the 'Show Solution' button becomes available. Minimum 1 attempt.
Set solution as revealable
Ensure 'Revealable' is toggled on — this is what allows the Show Solution button to appear for students.
ℹ️ Note
The platform enforces that every activity has hints and a solution. Chapters missing these cannot be published. This ensures every student has scaffolded support when working independently.
Preview & publish
Live preview
Click the Preview toggle to open a collapsible panel showing the student-facing render as you build. Updates in real time.
Save
Click Save to save your progress as a draft. Students cannot see draft chapters even if the class uses the course.
Publish
Makes the chapter available to assign to classes. Appears in My Content as Published.
Unlock in class
Once published, the chapter appears automatically in any class using the linked course. Go to your class → Chapters tab and unlock it to make it accessible to students.
